Sean Rodriguez to Rays

Completing the Scott Kazmir deal, the Angels today sent infielder/outfielder Sean Rodriguez to the Rays. Tampa Bay previously had acquired left-handed pitching prospect Alex Torres and infielder Matt Sweeney.

Rodriguez, a Miami native, returns to Florida giving new manager Joe Maddon a variety of options. A center fielder in high school, Rodriguez has played primarily at second base for the Angels but showed in a brief opportunity in Minnesota in July that he can handle left field capably as well.

Playing two games at the Metrodome in left, Rodriguez had three hits, including a  booming home run to center, while making several excellent plays.

Rodriguez batted .200 in 25 at-bats with the Angels this season, with two homers and four RBIs. He showed his power at Triple-A Salt Lake this season, batting .299 with 29 homers and 93 RBIs in 103 games. He ranked second in the Pacific Coast League in homers and slugging percentage (.616) and was tied for third in RBIs.

Kazmir is scheduled to make his Angels debut on Wednesday agianst the Mariners in Seattle.

I was afraid of that. This trade was expensive; Sean Rodriguez is going to be a great major leaguer, with multiposition potential and a little major league pop…

May Kasmir be great, for the rest of his contract.

Every trade deadline and offseason, many an Angel fan says that they don’t push hard enough, aren’t aggressive enough in trades. This is why. You gotta pay to get. We fans will just have to trust the Angels’ farm system to bring up another Sean Rodriguez. We also must realize that this year, unlike most years in the past, pitching was a sore spot. I think it will all work out just fine.

I don’t like giving up Sean he will come back and bit them some day. The guy is going to be one great ball player soon. Its good for him he will pay in the Majors sooner then if he stayed with the Angels .

I am very happy the Angels acquired Scott who is an excellent addition to the team but now to find out Sean is gone. Big mistake. Sean is another Evan Longoria, but Joe Maddon can see that. Looks like we will see Sean and Tampa Bay in the playoffs next year. OK, I am done whining. We have a great team and in great position to go all the way. Let’s Go Angels!!!

I am happy the Rays picked up Rodriguez. He seems to be the future at 2B for us. I wish that there were a way for he and Akinori Iwamura to exist on the same team, but I think Aki’s time in Tampa Bay is done. Much to my chagrin. Kaz would have helped us with our playoff push, but I think losing him for the trio of highly talented young players is worth the trade. The guys we got are really going to help us in the years to come.

I find it amazing that the same people that were wanting to back up the truck and unload the likes of Santana, Saunders, Wood, Adenhart, Aybar, Kendrick among others (4-5 at a time) for the likes of Miguel Cabrerra or Doc Halladay are complaining about 3 minor leaguers for one of the top young left handed starters in baseball under contract for the next 3 years.

Are you kidding me? Sure Rodriguez is going to be good and the others in the deal may develop into good players at some point… but breaking it down, what was the likelihood that any of these three would even be getting playing time from Scioscia anytime soon?

S Rod is behind Figgins, Kendrick, Aybar, Wood and Izturis. Which means that two of them will have to go away or get hurt before Sean would even get into a game.

Kazmir solidified the starting rotation for the playoffs, insures us against any of the other 4 getting reinjured, gives us another lefty which plays huge against some teams and finally insures us in case lackey walks.

This was a huge deal for the Angels with TONS of upside.
